My name is Eugene Schroeder. I am an artist living and working in New York City since 2000. I have been painting for almost 20 years. I have been somewhat reclusive about sharing my work until the last few years but now......

      I want to share my artwork and unique experience with art and life with as many people as I can. I put up this site not only to share my artwork with people but also to create a dialog about art and it’s role in our lives.

     Life on the West Coast inspired me to pursuit a life of art. I Studied art in LA and ended up at The San Francisco Art Institute. Studying art in North Beach ,the heart of the Beat Generation , shaped many of the attitudes about life and art I have today.

     In the nineties I did a lot of spray painting. After a stint as a tagger and doing some outdoor graffiti work, I became disappointed with the lack of permanence and respect for this medium and began using graffiti and street art forms as a basis for my fine arts work. At this point I don’t intend to make work that looks like graffiti or street art , it’s just how it always turns out.

     The way I work now is not unlike how a street wall in an urban city might come to be painted. I make paintings on top of paintings on top of paintings, destroying the parts of the painting that don’t work for me, and keeping the parts that seem special until the final work emerges. I call these paintings “the sum of all destructions”. In many ways my own life has been about destruction and new beginnings.

     Until I get famous ....I work at night, as a DJ in New York City. This informs the elements of my paintings as well.
